Thomas Croft Architects

Thomas Croft Architects was established as a practice in 1995, although a large number of private projects had been undertaken by Croft from 1987 onwards.

TCA's early work often involved the re-use of historic listed structures
in a very contemporary manner. Croft Barn (1988), Spicer Townhouse
(1997) & Timothy Taylor Gallery (1996) are completed exemplars of
the office's working method of setting modernity within antiquity.
With the completion of the Royal Yacht Squadron Pavilion (2000)
TCA has progressed to designing complete modern buildings in antique
& highly sensitive settings.

TCA's objective is to produce exceptional modern architecture that
enhances and relates to historic contexts using the most contemporary
of forms and materials.

Croft is a member of the Casework Panel of The Georgian Group and
TCA is on English Heritage's 'Register of Consultants recommended
for works to historic buildings on the Government Estate'.

Croft is also a member of the Government's South East Regional Design Panel, which was established in 2002 with the job of raising development standards throughout the region.

Thomas Croft

Thomas Croft (b.1959) trained at the Bartlett School of Architecture & the Royal College of Art, London. As a student he won the British Institution Architecture Award & the Sir Henry Herbert Bartlett Travel Scholarship.

Before starting his own practice he worked for the following well-known architects & designers:-

  • 1985-6 - Richard Meier & Partners, New York (Siemens Research Centre in Munich & the Jerusalem Supreme Courts competition).
  • 1986-89 - Rick Mather Architects, London (residential & art gallery projects, including the Waddington Gallery in Cork Street).
  • 1990-3 - John Stefanidis, London (period renovations of several historic houses).
  • 1993-5 - John Pawson, London (Calvin Klein store in Tokyo, Calvin
Klein offices in New York, the Donnelly Gallery in Dublin & the
    Kerlin Gallery in Dublin).

His unusually wide experience of working on both high modern and historic building projects have combined to create a singular approach to the making of architecture.

'Croft's success is rooted in his ability to marry his own modernist architectural agenda with a design that entertains rather than threatens' - as The Daily Telegraph said of the Royal Yacht Squadron Pavilion.
