The Georgian Group
London
The Georgian Group is the national charity dedicated to preserving Georgian period (broadly 1700-1837) buildings and gardens in the UK. Every year they are consulted on over 6,000 planning applications involving demolition or alterations. Their intervention has helped save many Georgian buildings and protect others from unsympathetic alterations.
The Group's headquarters is a magnificant Grade 1 listed Georgian townhouse designed by Robert Adam in Fitzroy Square, London W1. The building was used as a bank for much of the 20th century and suffered several unfortunate alterations, including extensions and a large concrete bank vault in the basement that cannot now be removed for structural reasons.
The main building was very sympathetically renovated in the mid-1990's. However the Group is now keen to develop a new Study & Archive Centre utilising the basement and other areas and have asked TCA to draw up a contemporary-style scheme to discuss with the planners and for fundraising.
