Fox Barn
Canterbury, Kent
Completion due 2008
The conversion of a series of medieval timber framed barns into a single family house. The way the new abstract pieces of architecture are placed below the old barns structural umbrella is related to our previous barn projects. However a dramatic new element is a single 40 metre long window running the whole length of the building, with virtually no other windows anywhere elsewhere in the whole barn.
Canterbury City Council Planners were clear that a very strong case needed to be made for the barn to get a change of use consent from its previous agricultural use. Our ultimately successful negotiations lasted for almost 2 years.
The Planners granted consent for the huge single window on the grounds that it was simply a contemporary version of the timber boarded cladding it replaced.
